CR3ST!! + thoughts on the community

HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

new bladee album. i actually can't believe this! this album is already one of my favorite albums ever, so  here's what i think about it.

according to ecco's instagram, Crest was recorded in Spring 2020. They've kept this album secret for TWO YEARS!! they're so funny. i'm glad they finally decided to release it. it's dreamy, beautiful, and so otherworldly it makes you laugh out loud sometimes. whitearmor's production is incredible as usual, his samples on these tracks are so genius. Sheep sounds on White Meadow, what sounds like someone biting into an apple or perhaps a skeleton's bones rattling on Yeses (Red Cross), kitty or animal crossing(?) sounds and windshield wipers on Chaos Follows, and the "perfect!" from Street Fighter II on 5 Star Crest (4 Vattenrum) (which also has sheep sounds and windshield wiper sounds). it's all PERFECT. whitearmor is one of the greatest producers of all time (in my opinion) and no one else could have done this album justice like he did.

i'm not going to do a song by song review for this album, i just want you to listen and enjoy this album. it's very beautiful, so relax, take it in, and just really, really listen.

now, i have some thoughts. allow me to go on a bit of a rant here. i've been thinking a lot about this idea, and Crest coming out has really sharpened my thoughts on the "drainer" community. some bladee fans don't really like Crest, think it's mid, or whatever. it makes me kind of upset. i think bladee and ecco should make whatever music they like, not "eversince 2" or whatever these 14 year old boys on instagram want. if they want to make pop music, let them make their pop music!! they're not teenagers anymore, in fact they're pushing 30. they can really do whatever the fuck they want. in their article with The Face, they talk about how they don't want to be marketable or even liked. Ecco says "[We're] definitely not interested in entertaining anyone", continuing, "None of us are really that interested in marketing ourselves. I mean, we could, but I don't think we'd be very happy!" I think it really boils down do that last line he says. If they made the music their fans want, if they confined themselves to their past styles and made the same music over and over, they wouldn't be happy.

the more and more i assimilate myself into the "drainer" community, the less i like the people who like the same things as me. i feel like it's hard to imagine that drain gang is their first big obsession with an artist or their first time being a fan of someone, but the way they act- calling them gay/speculating on their sexuality, making jokes about how they look or saying an album is bad because it's not specifically what they want from an artist- leads me to believe they don't know how to be a fan. this is stuff you learn not to do when you're 13 and think josh and tyler from twenty one pilots are fucking. it's not cool AT ALL. these children are acting like just because they're not making their dreary, ice-laden cloud rap about drugs and wanting to kill themselves anymore that they can't just go listen to it. like, relax, he's not about to delete his discography because he doesn't fw it anymore. i think if we, as a community, learn how to act properly towards them, they wouldn't hate us so much or just use us as wallets (which i am fine with being a wallet, tbh. they can really do whatever they want and i'd support them. that's just part of being a fan, i guess).

lastly, i just want to bring all my points together and say that Crest is a very beautiful evolution of bladee. i'm very happy that he's happy, enjoying life, getting rid of his material possessions, and finding peace after he's lived through some traumatic things. in fact, 5 Star Crest (4 Vattenrum) is dedicated to their friend, Vattenrum, who committed suicide, which i think it's a very beautiful and personal memorial. one more thing, i think it's really important that we view bladee and ecco2k as projects that are being worked on by their artists, Benjamin Reichwald and Zak Arogundade Gaterud. as much as i refer to the people as bladee and ecco, i know that they are not these personalities. a quote i use a lot when talking about bladee is from an interview with Fader Magazine. He says- "I like to reinvent Bladee. When I get tired of something, I just want to move onto the next part of the saga." Crest is just the next part in the saga, and I look forward to what comes next.
