this week i was in seattle and while i was there, i bought + read a couple graphic novels that i would actually highly recommend.
the first book i read was epileptic 1 by david b. i liked this one a lot. it's like an autobiography and it is VERY interesting. the artist had a very complex childhood, and his art portrays his child self's point of view beautifully. to kind of explain the plot, the artist's brother had epilepsy and to treat him, his family turned to like, homeopathic methods. they even stayed at communes! it's a very interesting story, and i plan on reading the other volumes.
the next book is other stories and the horse you rode in on by dakota mcfadzean. i really liked this book!! the cartoons were cute and the plots of the comics are perfectly mysterious. i have a feeling that one day i will be in a situation and i'll be like, oh this is just like that one comic from that book. my favorite was probably the horse you rode in on. it's relatable as someone who was just in high school. HIGHLY recommend!
the next one is the true lives of the fabulous killjoys: national anthem by gerard way!!! i love my chemical romance, so of course i'm a fan of whatever gerard does, especially with mcr concepts. after all, every mcr concept was like one of gerard's self-insert fantasies. this book is incredible. the main character mike "gerard" milligram, spews this pretentious, angsty monologue and a deranged npr-like radio station plays consistently throughout the first part of the book, until it's voice is murdered by the scarecrow. that song is so good i love danger days. the plot is fairly easy to follow if you are familiar with danger days, but, unfortunately, if you haven't listened to danger days, i'm not sure how easily you would be able to pick up on the plot at all. like, if i was unfamiliar with the universe, i would have too many questions to enjoy the book, and gerard's thick, jelly-like poetic ramblings would seem impenetrable and nonsensical to me. with all that said, i loved it.
the final book i read was remina by junji ito!! of course i had to pick up one of his mangas at one of my favorite comic book stores in seattle, and i had never even seen this one before. the concept of this book is absolutely amazing, but as usual, junji ito doesn't completely stick the landing. i feel like he could've done more with the mysterious cult leader figure, and SPOILERS!!! i don't think remina should have survived. something i really like about uzumaki is that the main characters die at the end. i feel like it gives it another layer to the story, like no matter how hard you struggle, the spiral gets you in the end. i did not feel that way about remina, but i understand that all his books can't end in the same way. i just think he could've done more!! here are some ideas: 1. planet eats her 2. planet kills everyone but her 3. the cult leader is like an alien and the planet is inhabited by an alien species that eats planets (this could've been so easy) and they want her for some reason... anyway i could go on, but you get the point. the only thing i liked was the reveal of the homeless guy being the astronaut prodigal son, but i feel like it slowed down the climax and falling action of the plot. i ended up feeling underwhelmed, especially when thinking back to how i felt about the rising actions- remina becoming an idol, her fan club, and the planet's descent upon earth. i would still highly recommend it, though.
anyway, those are the books i read.
